It is very tough to do this. However, in my experience, I found the best thing to do is to just go overboard. Donate everything, get rid of nearly all of your library books, digitize everything you can. In most respects, the library ends up being free book storage for you anyway.

Sure you end up wishing you had some things in a year, but at that point you have accomplished your goal and the little bit of $ spent to replace the thing you wish you didn't give away is more than made up for in piece of mind gained.
